Northern Ireland are through to the knockout stages of the European Championship Finals despite being beaten 1-0 by world champions Germany in their final group game tonight.

Mario Gomez got the only goal of the game in the 29th minute at the Parc des Princes in Paris but the boys in green owe their qualification to goalkeeper Michael McGovern who pulled off a number of world class saves to prevent the Germans adding to their tally.

Michael O’Neill’s side, who finished third with three points in Group C thanks to that 2-0 win over Ukraine, qualify on goal difference as one of the best third-placed sides as a result of Turkey failing to beat the Czech Republic by four goals in Group D.

Around 50 fans from the Derry branch of the Northern Ireland Supporters Club are in France.

One of them is local DUP councillor David Ramsey (pictured), who tonight tweeted “Our party is not over.”
