Bring on the girls…. New football academy set up at Derry City

A new academy aimed at developing girls’ football Derry will be launched tomorrow at Brooke Park in the city.

The Derry City Ladies Academy will offer weekly coaching sessions to girls at both primary and secondary school age in a bid to identify new talent and nurture players as their skills progress.

The academy’s long-term plans include opening up a number of development centres across the North West that they hope will become centres of excellence for female football in the region, as well as offering a fun and inclusive environment for girls of all abilities to enjoy the game.

Rory Kehoe, manager of Derry City Ladies senior squad, said one of the main aims of the academy was to bridge that gap, to provide an extra few steps on the ladder and help prepare players for senior football.”

The coaching sessions will take place at the Brooke Park 3G pitch with the 10.00-11.00am session catering for 7-11-year-olds, while the session beginning at 11am will be for 11-16-year-olds.

The academy has been created with the help of funding from the Irish Football Association (IFA), who have assigned a coaching mentor to oversee the sessions.
