Two Derry-based groups have commemorated the centenary of the Battle of Somme by creating a pack of specially designed playing cards.

The packs contain unique images of numerous individuals, scenes, monuments and events associated with the First World War.

Templemore Great War History Society, in partnership with community publishing house Guildhall Press, is behind the innovative shared history project which is supported by the Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion Fund.

Free packs have been distributed in the interface area around the Fountain Estate and Bishop Street in Derry by Seamus Breslin, the Templemore Society co- ordinator and historian Trevor Temple from the Fountain area.

The inspiration for the cards came from an exhibition entitled ‘Orange and Green’ which related the story of volunteers from across the city who served during World War I. Over 1,000 people associated with the city died and thousands more were injured during the many battles that took place including the Somme, Ypres and Verdun.
