With just days to go until the arrival in Derry of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race the Mayor of Derry and Strabane has called for thousands of spectators to go along and be part of the ‘LegenDerry Finale’ prizegiving event in Guildhall Square on Wednesday next, July 13 at 7pm.
Extending an open invitation for people to officially welcome the Clipper Race to the city and celebrate the achievements of the winning teams for Race 12 from New York to Derry, Alderman Hilary McClintock said it would be a unique occasion as it would the first time the crew prize-giving will be held publicly in the city.
Cllr McClintock also appealed for everyone to get behind the home team, Derry~Londonderry~Doire, by joining the huge outdoor party in Guildhall Square dressed in the team colour purple.
Chart-topping Irish band Seo Linn will headline the night of celebration which looks set to be one of the key highlights of the Foyle Maritime Festival organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council from July 9th-17th 2016.
Mayor McClintock said: “This will be the first time that the crew prize-giving event for the Clipper Race has been held in public in our city and it promises to be a momentous occasion.
“Fingers crossed our home team are placed in the top three for their homecoming race but, regardless of race position there’s no doubt they’ll receive the biggest cheer of the evening when they take to the stage.”
