VIDEO: Hundreds attend Derry remembrance ceremony to mark Battle of the Somme centenary

Several hundred people have attended a remembrance ceremony in Derry tonight to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

Mayor of Derry and Strabane District, Alderman Hilary McClintock, led the laying of poppy wreaths at the war memorial in The Diamond.

Also in attendance were SDLP Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jim McKeever, SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan and the SDLP leader on the local Counci, Cllr Martin Reilly.

DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton, former Stormont Speaker, the DUP’s WIllie Hay, local DUP and Ulster Unionist councillors also attended.

A two-minute silence was observed following the playing of the Last Post by Bryan Morgan.
