The green light has been given for the construction of social housing on the Springtown Road in Derry.

The decision was granted by the planning committee on Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The news has been welcomed by Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Eric McGinley, who said the need for increased social housing provision in the area was “beyond question.”

He added: “I am aware of the high demand for social housing in the wider Hazelbank- Ballymagroarty area and the desire of families to remain within this locality and this new development will go some way to addressing the deficit which currently exists.

Cllr McGinley concluded “It is to be hoped that this particular area can be earmarked for further housing development and it will be important to ensure that if this materialises it is accompanied by the necessary infrastructure which will accommodate the provision of public transport.”
