Work is nearing completion on what is hoped will be an ‘everlasting legacy’ to a young footballing star whose death last year left the Derry GAA community hearbroken.
An artist is currently working on a striking mural (pictured) at the entrance to the new training pitch at Ballinderry GAC grounds, which will be named the Aaron Devlin Pitch.
On Friday night last, the Devlin family were joined by Aaron’s many friends and teammates at St Patrick’s Church in Ballinderry to mark the first anniversary of his tragic death.
Barry Mullan from Ballinderry GAC said that Aaron ‘remains at the forefront of their thoughts’.
He said: “It is a year since Aaron’s death but it isn't any less believable nor is the pain or grief any less bearable. Aaron remains at the forefront of all our thoughts. He is a massive loss to our club and an even bigger loss to his family.
“Work is just beginning on the Aaron Devlin Pitch, which we hope will be a lasting legacy to Aaron. He was a very special person. We hope that our younger players will be inspired by him, he is the perfect role model.
.
“Work at the training pitch is still in the very early stages. This mural is just the start of an everlasting legacy - something for the Devlin family and the whole parish to be proud of.
“A lot of time and effort has gone on behind the scenes but the Devlin family were the driving force behind the pitch and the fundraising golf day. Just like his family, we want a lasting tribute to Aaron, something befitting of him,” he said.
