A rally will be held in Derry city centre this weekend in support of a campaign calling for the release of a Derry republican currently in custody in Maghaberry Prison.

Tony Taylor (pictured), a prominent member of the Republican Network for Unity group in the city, was returned to prison in March after his early release licence was suspended by the then British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers.

The 48-year-old was sentenced to 18 years in jail in 1994 after being injured in a premature explosion in Derry.

He was released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement.

In 2011 he was jailed for three years for possession of a rifle.

The Northern Ireland Office (NIO) has said his licence was revoked by the Parole Commission because of the risk he posed to the public.

However, there has been strong opposition to his continued detention.

Independent Councillor Gary Donnelly has called for support for the upcoming rally which will take place in Guildhall Square at 3.00pm on Saturday.

He said: “Tony Taylor was on a family outing to Crescent Link Retail Park on Thursday 10th March 2016.

“The family car was suddenly stopped and surrounded by police cars, and Tony was taken away without any explanation given.

“Tony’s young family which includes two teenage girls and his son, who has physical and learning disabilities, were seriously traumatised by this experience.

“His arrest and his continued absence are having a devastating impact on his family.

“Tony’s son’s disability means he is totally dependent on his mother, who herself is physically and emotionally drained both because of her husband’s detention and his long-term absence from the family.

“The decision to jail Tony has been taken by the British secretary of state, Teresa Villiers, based on unaccountable intelligence provided by MI5.”
