A plaque in memory of a Derry IRA man killed during the War of Independence will be unveiled in the city this afternoon by Sinn Fein MLA Martin McGuinness.
Dan McGandy is reported to have been interrupted by British soldiers while stealing hand grenades from a local engineering works on 20 January 1919.
During a struggle with three soldiers fell into the Foyle and although a strong swimmer, he was overpowered and drowned.
Today’s unveiling, part of the programme of events to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising, will take place at 3.00pm at Annie’s Bar on Strabane Old Road in the Waterside area of the city.
