An eyewitness has spoken how he watched in horror as a runaway police car careened down Derry city centre before crashing into a set of traffic lights.

The incident happened at around 6.30pm on Monday when the car rolled down Shipquay Street.

It continued through Shipquay Gate before coming to a stop after colliding with a traffic light pole at the junction of Shipquay Place and Foyle Street (pictured) beside the Gainsborough Bar.

It is understood the incident happened after the handbrake was left off in the vehicle.

Mohamed Ali, who owns a confectionary shop, Samara’s at Shipquay Place, witnessed the incident.

“I wasn’t long in the shop, it was after six, and I had my car parked outside,” he said.

“I then saw the police car rolling down the street, there was no one in it, and police officer was coming after it.

“At that point I though the police vehicle was going to crash into my car, but it just avoided it and hit the traffic lights.

“There was some damage to the front of the police vehicle and the traffic lights.”

Mr Ali added: “The street was quiet at the time and there wasn’t many people about, which there usually is, so it was lucky that no one was hurt.”

A PSNI spokesperson said they had no information about a police vehicle being involved in a collision at that time.
