A 33-year-old man is to appear at Derry Crown Court accused of assaulting and threatening to kill a man while armed with weapons at a taxi office on Christmas Day.

Michael Coyle, whose address was given as the Simon Community in Ballymena, appeared before Derry Magistrates Court charged with threats to kill, two counts of possessing offensive weapons in a public place, namely a spanner and knife at Nippy Taxis Strabane Old Road office, common assault and two counts of witness intimidation.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place on Christmas Day last year, December 27, 2015, and January 20, 2016.

During a preliminary enquiry, the defence accepted there was a prima facie case to answer.

When the charges were put to Coyle, he indicated that he understood them.

When asked if he wished to give any evidence in his defence or call witnesses to give evidence on his behalf, he said, ‘Not at this stage’.

Coyle will be returned to Derry Crown Court for trial on September 13.

He was released on his own bail of £500.
