Police came under attack from petrol bombs during a security alert in Derry last night.
The PSNI said up to 25 petrol bombs as well as fireworks were thrown at officers as they dealt with a security alert at Butcher Street.
A police spokesperson said they were alerted to a suspect device at Butcher Gate around 11.30pm
“ATO attended and, following a controlled explosion, declared the object to be an elaborate hoax.
“This has now been removed for further examination.
“During the clearance operation a number of fireworks and 25 petrol bombs were thrown at police by youths in the Fahan Street (pictured) shortly after midnight.
“There were no injuries reported and the operation ended shortly before 2.30am this morning.”
The troubles came just a few hours before the beginning of today’s Apprentice Boys’ Relief of Derry parade in the city centre.
