Hopes of finding a resolution to a contentious August 15th bonfire in Derry’s Bogside would appear to have failed after a large structure was built overnight.
The bonfire (pictured), containing hundreds of wooden pallets and over 60 tyres – including four large tractor tyres – has been built on the road at the bottom of the Lecky Road Flyover.
It is understood young people involved in the building of the bonfire yesterday turned down pleas to move it to a different location.
Last year it was built on a nearby green area below the city’s historic walls.
Last week in an operation involving police, hundreds of wooden pallets being stored for the bonfire at adjacent Meenan Square were removed after the owner of the property were they were being kept was issued with an enforcement order by Derry City and Strabane District Council.
