A 29-year-old man whose nose was broken by a man he attempted to punch has been fined £115.
Mark Bradley, of Elaghmore Park in Derry, appeared before the city's magistrates court today charged with common assault.
The offence took place on October 21, 2015.
The court heard that the injured party said he was punched by one man and that Bradley then attempted to punch him.
When CCTV footage was viewed it showed that Bradley’s punch did not connect with the man.
The man then pulled Bradley to the ground and punched and kicked him, breaking his nose.
The injuries sustained by the injured party were not inflicted by Bradley.
Leonie Keegan, defence solicitor, said that there had been a ‘verbal exchange’ between Bradley and the injured party.
She said Bradley did accept he raised his arm in a fist but that he didn’t strike or connect with the injured party.
She added: “The injured party then dragged Mr Bradley onto the ground and subjected him to a very serious assault.”
Ms Keegan said the injured party had pleaded guilty to the assault, in which he had broken Bradley’s nose.
She added that Bradley had co-operated with police and had ended up ‘worse off’ than the injured party.
District Judge Barney McElholm said: “This is tantamount to disorderly and is very low level; if you forgive the pun, it will teach him to keep his nose out of other’s business.”
Bradley was fined £100 and ordered to pay a £15 offender levy.
