Derry man alleges he was assaulted by his mother or girlfriend while watching a Conor McGregor fight

A 28-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted by his mother or girlfriend while watching a Conor McGregor fight ended up being arrested for disorderly behaviour when police were called.

Gareth McCartney, of Fernabbey Park, appeared before Derry Magistrates Court today charged with disorderly behaviour.

The offence took place on March 6, 2016.

The court heard that police received a report of a domestic disturbance in Northland Road and when they attended the scene attempted to speak to McCartney who was shouting.

Police asked him to stop shouting.

However, he continued to shout and swear and when arrested for disorderly behaviour said, ‘I don’t give a f***’.

Paddy MacDermott, defence solicitor, said that McCartney had been sitting up late to watch the fight of mixed martial arts Irish star, Conor McGregor (above), with his girlfriend and mother.

He said the fight was on at around 5am and all parties had consumed ‘too much alcohol’.

Mr MacDermott said that McCartney was then assaulted by either his mother of girlfriend and sustained a cut to his face and when police were called he ended up getting arrested for disorderly behaviour.

Mr MacDermott said that McCartney had previous offences after he ‘lost all of his money and took temper out on a poker machine’.

Judge Barney McElholm said: “I would stick to the poker machines because the women of this city aren’t as passive.”

He added: “The first time he appeared before me was when he was 14 in the youth court, almost 14 years ago, that makes me feel weary.

“Well, it wasn’t the worst case of disorderly behaviour.”

McCartney was fined £200 and ordered to pay an offender levy of £15.
