Residents of Barrs Lane in the Hazelbank area of Derry are being warned to be vigilant after vandals caused an outage on Monday night.
The warning comes from SDLP councillor for the area, Shauna Cusack, who said the “wanton vandalism” had put the lives of both residents and road users at risk.
She added: “It would appear quite a bit of effort was put into disabling the lights leaving exposed cables and cases hanging precariously from the posts.
“Not only has this plunged a community into darkness, it also poses a very serious safety risk to those passing by.
“Transport NI has made every effort to respond to these reports but there is a cycle of continuous vandalism which makes this very difficult.
“This behaviour must end immediately and those responsible pinpointed. What may be just a laugh for the misguided vandals is actually a serious health and safety as well as security issue for those who live in or visit the area.”
Cllr Cusack concluded: “I would appeal to anyone with any information or who witnessed anything suspicious to report it immediately to the authorities or your local representative.”
