Police in Derry have said they were still trying to establish a motive for a paramilitary-style attack in Derry earlier this week in which a 40-year-old man was shot in both ankles.

The shooting happened in the Culdaff Gardens area of Creggan, a small cul-de-sac situated close to Rinmore Drive at around 10.35pm on Monday night.

Eyewitnesses said the victim, a delivery driver, was lured into the area by a fake call before he was set upon by four masked men wielding iron bars.

He was then shot in both ankles, after which those living in the street came to his aid before he was rushed by ambulance to Altnagelvin Hospital.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said that its investigations were at an early stage and detectives were investigating a motive for the shooting.

Appealing to the public for information, PSNI Chief Inspector Gordon McCalmont said: "I would ask anyone with any information about this shooting to contact detectives at Strand Road Police Station on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1403 of 29/08/16.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
