An investigation is to be launched after a group of children got lost today while taking part in a fun run before the Waterside Half Marathon.
The children took part in a two kilometre family fun run around St Columb’s Park as part of the events surrounding the popular half marathon.
However, it is understood that during the fun run, some of the children took a wrong turn and ended up away from the main race.
When they failed to appear at the end of the run at the expected time, the parents of the children were concerned about their whereabouts.
Race volunteers and police officers then set off in search of the children and they were all eventually accounted for.
A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council, which organised the fun run and half marathon, said they were aware of the issue with the fun run.
The spokesperson said a small number of children ran past one of the turn points in the race resulting in them joining the main half marathon race.
The spokesperson apologised for any upset caused to the young participants and their families and added that the situation would be investigated as part of a review of the event.
