The death has taken place of Jim McKinney, a popular former senior employee with Derry City Council.
Mr McKinney passed away peacefully in Edenballymore Care Home last night, surrounded by his family.
He was 89 and had been ill for some time.
Mr McKinney took up the position of chief administrative officer with Derry City Council, based in the Guildhall, in 1974, having moved from Corby in England where he had held a similar position.
He retired from the role, equivalent to deputy town clerk, in 1982
A talented GAA footballer, he was a member of Eire Og, the last team from Derry city to win the Derry Senior Football Championship in 1952, defeating Desertmartin in the final.
Formerly of Edanmont Park (off Glen Road) he was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, some years ago.
His funeral will leave his son Finian’s home, 79 Hatmore Park, at 9.20am tomorrow to St Eugene’s Cathedral for Requiem Mass at 10.00am.
He will be laid to rest immediately afterwards in the City Cemetery.
He is survived by daughters, Marion, Eithne and Louise, and son Finian.
