Plans have been put forward for a nightclub on the site of a well-known Derry pub which closed its doors in 2014.
The Clarendon Bar is set for a new lease of life after plans were lodged to open a new nightclub at the building, located at numbers 44-48 Strand Road and numbers 1 to 2 Lower Clarendon Street, which will include a three storey extension to the existing building.
The Clarendon shut in November 2014, having been one of the most recognisable public houses in the city centre for decades.
The bar was successfully sold to a new owner in March of last year, after being placed on the market with an asking price of £450,000.
On October of last year, the licence for the bar was transferred to businessman Michael Taggart at Derry Magistrates Court.
A planning application seeking to open a new nightclub at the building has now been lodged with the local planning authority, Derry City and Strabane District Council.
The applicant is Naples Investments Ltd, which has an address at 16 Main Street, Limavady.
Planning permission is being sought for the provision of a night club on the first and second floors of the building.
The applicant is also seeking approval for other alterations of the building, including the provision of ground and first floor beer garden and a smoking area with covering, cloak room, service yard and storage at the building.
In addition to the three storey extension to side and rear of an existing public house, there are plans to alter the front façade of the building including new render finish, removal of quoins and raised plaster bands, installing new full level windows/shop fronts at ground floor, retractable awnings, new signage boards, new PVC windows and a new pedestrian entrance off the Strand Road.
The planning application is currently under consideration and will come before a future meeting of the council’s Planning Committee.
