Manchester United fans from Derry missed out on attending yesterday’s derby game against Manchester City because their flight was delayed.

A Ryanair flight was due to take off at 9am yesterday morning from City of Derry Airport bound for Liverpool.

It is understood that a number of local Man United fans had planned to travel on the flight.

The plane was due to land in Liverpool at 10am and the United fans would then have travelled on to Manchester for the game which kicked off at Old Trafford at 12.45pm.

It is not known if there were any Manchester City fans on the flight from Derry.

However, the football fans’ plans were scuppered when the flight was delayed.

It did not take off until shortly after midday yesterday, meaning the United fans had no chance of making the game on time.

It is not known if the fans went ahead and travelled on the plane after it had been delayed.

Maybe it was for the best, given that United were beaten 2-1 in yesterday’s big game.

A spokesperson from City of Derry Airport confirmed that the Ryanair flight scheduled to depart at 9am to Liverpool John Lennon Airport on Saturday was delayed and departed at 12:02pm.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this delay may have caused,” the spokesperson added.
