‘Joyriders’ being blamed for setting fire to car next to elderly woman’s home

So-called ‘joyriders’ are being blamed for setting fire to a car next to an elderly woman’s Derry home.

The Renault car was abandoned and torched in the car park of Templemore Sports Complex shortly after 11.15pm last night.

The blaze was extinquished by a firefighters from the Northland Road station.

A spokesperson said the car was “well alight” by the time the crew arrived.

The spokesperson added: “Firefighters using breathing apparatus and a hosereel jet dealt with the fire.”

Local people have expressed concern as the car was set on fire only feet from the woman’s home and yards from a household oil tank.
