The discovery of £290,000 of drugs in Derry and Toomebridge last night has “saved lives,” Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton has said.
Two men were arrested and a substantial amount of suspected herbal cannabis and cash seized.
The suspects, aged 25 and 40, were detained after police stopped a car on Trench Road in the Waterside area of the city and a van on the Toombridge Bypass in Co Derry..
Detective Inspector Tom McClure, from the PSNI's Reactive and Organised Crime Branch, said a “substantial amount” of suspected herbal cannabis with an estimated street value of approximately £280,000 found in the car and approximately £10,400 in cash was discovered in the van.
Congratulating the PSNI on the seizures, Mr Middleton said “The PSNI are committed to halting drug crime in Northern Ireland and this is another clear example of their continued work in combating the scourge of drugs.
“Drugs can destroy lives and communities and I am pleased that this very substantial amount has been taken off the street.
“This seizure of drugs will have saved lives and it is worrying to think what could have happened if these drugs had been sold on.
“The PSNI are committed to tackling drugs on our streets that pose a real danger to life. Those involved in selling them will face the courts.”
Mr Middleton concluded: "I would encourage anyone with any information relating to drugs in their area to contact the police.”
