Concern has been expressed after it was revealed there have been over 100 accidents on the same stretch of road in Derry in the past three years.
From the period of April 2013 to June of this year, there have been 109 accidents on the section of the Clooney Road dual carriageway from Caw roundabout at the Waterside end of the Foyle Bridge to Longfield roundabout close to City of Derry Airport.
However, the official figures do not take into account a number of accidents on the road in recent weeks, including a collision earlier this month which led to the death of a man.
The high number of accidents on this small stretch of road has led to a call for more to done to improve safety on it.
The accident figures for the Clooney Road accidents were revealed by the Minister for Infrastructure following a question in the Northern Ireland Assembly from Foyle SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan.
He had asked the Minister to detail how many road traffic accidents have occurred on the Clooney Road/Maydown dual carriageway in the last three years.
In response, Mr Hazzard said: “On a nine kilometre stretch of carriageway from the Caw Roundabout to the Longfield Roundabout on the Clooney Road/Maydown dual carriageway there have been a total of 104 road traffic collisions between 01 April 2013 and 31 March 2016.
“Information in relation to traffic collisions is made available to TransportNI by PSNI Traffic Branch.
“There is a lag in provision of this information but we are aware that, between 01 April 2016 and 30 June 2016, there have been a further five reported road traffic collisions.”
Mr Durkan said he was concerned at the number of accidents happening on the road.
“This is an extremely high number of collisions to occur on any road, never mind on a dual carriageway - a type of road that is meant to reduce the risk of crashes,” he said.
“These figures do not include the tragic recent fatality or indeed the three crashes that occurred in one week last month.
“It is clear that some sort of action is required to reduce the risk of collision on this busy road and to remind drivers of their responsibility too.”
In the recent fatal accident (pictured) on the Clooney Road, 44-year-old Waterside man Paul Crossan died on when the car he was travelling in was involved with a collision with another vehicle on 4 September.
