Dungiven and Feeny Local Committee for Cancer Research UK will hold ‘The Great Glenshane Lorry Pull’ on Saturday, October 15.

This event has proved to be one of the g successful fundraisers the local group has held, this year wull be the third event of its kind.

Over the past 23 years, the Committee has raised over £285,000 for Cancer Research.

This year, the group want to tie it in with the opening of the new radiography centre in Altnagelvin Hospital, with all proceeds going to the multi-million pound facility..

They are currently looking for teams of ten people to take part.

Each person will be given a sponsor form and asked to raise a minimum of £100. That way each team will raise £1,000.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We hope to get up to 25 teams. On the day, each team will pull the lorry for 20 metres approximately then move off to the side to let the next team take over, like a relay.

“It should be a great day. It doesn’t matter if people can’t get teams of ten, we will simply put groups together. Our area fundraising manager Sharon Arbuckle is hoping to get some of the scientists involved in clinical trials to come along on the day as well.”

The event will start from the Church of Ireland car park in Dungiven at approximately 12.15pm.

Teams will sign on in the church hall between 11.00am and 12 noon. There will be marshals, first aiders, a minibus and St John's Ambulance to ensure safety along the way.

Food, refreshments and entertainment will be provided for all at the Ponderosa in the afternoon including comedian, William Caulfield and a country and western group.
