The speed limit outside a Derry primary school has been reduced from 60 to 30 miles per hour.
It follows a long campaign to have the speed reduced outside Groarty Integrated Primary School on Coshquin Road on the outskirts of the city.
In May this year, a government department said it was "not feasible" to reduce the 60mph speed limit despite concerns from the school and parents.
Parents said the road was being used as a "rat run" by motorists taking a shortcut to avoid traffic congestion at the nearby Buncrana Rroad roundabout.
However, 30mph signs have now been erected on the section of the road on which the school is situated.
Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Eric McGinley, described the move as “great news.”
He said: “There has been a long campaign for the speed limit to be reduced on the Cosquin Road outside Groarty Primary school.
“It is always very busy at the best of times; a lot of motorists use this road as a shortcut and it was clear the speed limit was far too high.
“We spoke directly with the Minister Chris Hazzard just prior to the summer holidays and raised all those concerns with him. He announced at the start of September that there was to be a reduction of the speed limit on the road.
“I am pleased that the new 30mph signage has now been installed and would appeal to drivers to adhere to the new speed limit.”
Cllr McGinley concluded: “It’s important to commend everyone who has campaigned for safety measures on this road over the years.”
