Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton has expressed his concern at the increase in attacks on Northern Ireland Ambulance Service personnel.
Mr Middleton, deputy chairperson of the Health Committee, was speaking following a meeting of the Committee at which the NI Ambulance senior management were present.
He said: “It is deeply concerning that attacks on the ambulance service is set to reach a five year high.
“In 2012/2013 there were 264 attacks, compared with last year 2015/2016 in which there were 350 attacks.
“The message needs to get through to those individuals who carry out these attacks that there is a zero tolerance approach in relation to this despicable behaviour.”
Mr Middleton said he raised the need for further education programmes and media campaigns which he said have helped reduce the number of attacks on the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Servie.
He added: “.They have seen a 46% decrease in attacks.”
”These services provide a lifesaving role to our communities.”
Mr Middleton concluded: “Attacks on the are unacceptable and must come to an end.”
