Young people from the city and district will be given the opportunity to enter the political arena next week.
As part of Local Democracy Week, Derry City and Strabane District Council will be hosting a series of events held over three days for children and young people and will be providing hands-on education and opportunities for all ages to get involved.
Last year’s events were attended by almost 300 children and young people and the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Alderman Hilary McClintock is confident this year will be even more popular.
She said, ‘Local Democracy Week is very important for our young people in terms of their understanding of local government and providingthem with an insight to what we do.
‘As our young people become more politically aware, this is an opportunity to find out how they can influence the reshaping of Derry City and Strabane District Council and have their say in it, express their views on political roles, get to know their local Councillors and learn about their roles and responsibilities and find out how the democratic and decision making processes work and how they can take part.’
The programme of events will include; a Young Persons Debate titled, “Rock Enrol” at the Guildhall on Wednesday 12th October, the City and District’s Number One Citizen and “Do you get the Guildhall?” event on Thursday 13th October 2016 at the Guildhall, the Councillors go back to school and there will be the public Council meetings at the Guildhall Chamber (pictured) during the week.
