Four mums from County Derry have been honoured at the prestigious SuperValu SuperMums award ceremony, held at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.
Ballykelly’s Jennifer Smyth, Limavady’s Linda Dickson and Eglinton’s Sylvia Thompson were all recognised at the awards evening.
Thirty-five mums from across Northern Ireland were honoured, which saw Coleraine’s Charlene Dickey crowned SuperValu SuperMum 2016 and Co. Down’s Anouska Black announced as a runner-up alongside local mum Orla McLaughlin.
SuperValu Ballykelly mum Jennifer Smyth was recognised for always putting her children and grandchildren first, despite her own health issues. Having overcome a heart attack and heart bypass surgery, Jennifer’s family is her priority and she makes sure they have the best upbringing.
Representing SuperValu Limavady Linda Dickson was awarded for single-handedly raising her son since he was two years old following the death of his dad in a car crash. Linda also went on to study accountancy while working full-time and is now an accountant. She is currently furthering her career by studying Law part time at Ulster University, Magee.
SuperValu Eglinton mum Sylvia Thompson (pictured receiving her award) is a mother of three and was honoured for raising her grandchildren after losing her daughter Tanya. Sylvia is the backbone of her family and is always first to give a helping hand to anyone who needs her help, forsaking any time for herself.
Hundreds of nominations were received for the competition sponsored by Magnum and Robinsons, from inspiring mothers and 35 finalists were chosen from SuperValu stores across Northern Ireland.
The grand final was hosted by TV personality Claire McCollum who crowned Charlene the overall SuperValu SuperMum 2016, presenting a family trip to Disneyland Paris, courtesy of Clubworld Travel.
Kate Ferguson, SuperValu Communications Manager, said: “Congratulations to Charlene on being crowned SuperValu SuperMum 2016! This year we were overwhelmed with wonderful mums and their selflessness and Charlene truly is a SuperMum, not only in the incredible fundraising work she achieved to help her son Oliver walk, but in the support she is giving back to the community and those families in a similar situation.
“There are so many inspirational mothers across Northern Ireland who show such humility when dealing with life’s challenges. I would like to congratulate all 35 of our SuperMum finalists as they are all very deserving,” Kate added.
