Derry’s hoteliers have given their backing to the city’s bid to become 2019 European Youth Capital after meeting one of the youth champions who has been working on the development of the bid.

Addressing a hoteliers meeting in the Waterfoot Hotel, Linda McGlinchey explained how passionate she was about the project and spoke about the benefits the title would being to young people in the Derry and Strabane areas.

Earlier this week the final EYC19 bid document was submitted to the judges with the winning city expected to be announced on 16 November.

Linda spoke about the significance of EYC19 and how hugely important it is for people in the North West in terms of providing them with a voice and new opportunities.

“If we believe, we can achieve. Our youth is our future,” she said.

Odhran Dunne, from Visit Derry who organised the meeting, said hoteliers who attended were pleased to get an update and to hear at first hand details of the EYC19 bid.

He added: “The EYC19 team spoke in depth about the importance of EYC19 to our youth population and encouraged the hoteliers to not only get behind the bid but to help spread the word among their peers, their youth employees (15-24 year olds).

“We were particularly interested to hear about the youth employment projects and how the local hospitality sector can assist.”

If successful the bid would result in a year-long focus in 2019 on events, programmes and initiatives that will benefit young people in the city and district and will leave a lasting legacy.
