A young Derry woman who has been growing her hair long for the past decade has most of it cut off in the name of charity.
Twenty-year-old Lauren Breslin got the chop at Colum Cooke Salon the city order to donate her locks to children’s cancer charity, Little Princess Trust.
She has also raised hundreds of pounds that will be used to help make the wigs.
Little Princess Trust works with specialist suppliers and experienced hairdressers who offer wigs tailored to the individual child’s needs to give the most realistic look and feel possible to their original hair.
Its mission is to supply real hair wigs to children suffering with cancer, for the duration of their treatment.
In addition, it assists children with other conditions which also result in hair loss, the most common being alopecia.
Lauren said she hadbeen growing her hair long for ten years, but getting it cut short to donate it seemed like a worthwhile cause.
She said: “I have always wanted to do it, and this seemed like such a good cause, so it felt like the right time to do it.
“I’m quite nervous at the same time as I’ve only had it cut up short once before and I wasn’t that fond of it that time.
“But I’m happy to do it knowing it is going to such a great cause.”
Lauren has raised around £600 for the cause at this stage, thanks to donations from family, friends and work colleagues.
She added: “I have raised around £600 but I’m not going to send it off for a couple of weeks to give myself some extra time to raise money.
“I would really like to thank everyone who has contributed at this stage, I’m extremely grateful for all your help.
“The money raised will hopefully bring a smile to faces of a few very sick children.”
