A 61-year-old man has appeared at a Derry court charged with withholding information about the murder of Derry man, Paul McCauley.

Charles Buckingham of Nash Court Gardens, Margate, Kent, appeared before Derry Magistrates Court charged with withholding information knowing a murder had been committed and two counts of withholding information knowing grievous bodily harm with intent had been committed.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place on December 16, 2015.

The court heard the alleged offences related to Buckingham being in a car with Matthew Gillen, who has been charged with Mr McCauley's murder, and being told information by Gillen about his involvement in that murder.

Mr McCauley, pictured, died in a care facility in Derry in June 2015.

The father-of-one had been left in a vegetative state after he was attacked at a barbecue in Derry in 2006.

At this morning's hearing, the defence argued that Buckingham should not be tried for the offences here as they did not taken place in this jurisdiction.

The defence said that Buckingham had been told the information in Scotland and had remained in either Scotland or England since and had not come to Northern Ireland.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that the issue was 'if there was an offence committed, where it was committed'.

The prosecution are set to have a skeleton argument ready for June 1 and the matter will be back before the court again on June 8.

Buckingham was released on bail and ordered not to have any contact with the two men charged with Mr McCauley's murder, Matthew Gillen and Piper McClements formerly known as Daryl Proctor.

He is also banned from having any contact with any other Crown witness in the case.

Buckingham is excused from the next court appearance on June 8.
