Special meeting to be held in Derry tomorrow to address schools funding crisis

A special public meeting is to be held in Derry tomorrow to address the current funding crisis in schools.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NI) (NAHT) is hosting the meeting at Holy Family Primary School from 4-5pm.

The meeting will hear from local school principals, school staff, parents and governors about the impact of funding cuts on education and what this means for children.

A spokesperson for NAHT (NI) said that investment in education must be a priority.

This year there are 3,000 children in nursery and primary schools with no funding

"Reductions in funding have resulted in a cut of at least £61 per pupil in primary schools, £83 in nursery schools for full time pupils and £25 per pupil in real term for post primary," the spokesperson said.

"Parents contribute more to the cost of education in NI than any other region of the UK (on average £1222.30).

"Spending on pre-school, primary and secondary education per pupil is 46% higher in Scotland, 18% higher in England and 31% higher in Wales."

The spokesperson called for education to receive the necessary funding.

"This situation is unacceptable," the spokesperson said.

"In order to protect the future of our education system and ensure that every child’s needs are met we must have a properly funded education system."
