19-year-old Derry man charged in connection with attack on Danny Payne granted bail

A 19-year-old man charged in connection with an attack on Danny Payne in Derry city centre last month has been granted bail.

Mr Payne was assaulted in the Newmarket Street area of Derry in the early hours of Sunday, October 22, after having attended a friend’s birthday celebration at a nearby premises.

He suffered serious head injuries in the attack, while his wife Sarah who was also attacked, suffered a torn retina.

A Police officer told the court she could connect 19-year-old Sean McCourt to the incident.

A Public Prosecutor said 'given the nature of the case it will take some time to prepare a full file.'

The defendant was granted his own bail of £750 to appear on January 5 'for an update'.

He must reside at his Cornshell Fields address and observe a curfew from 11pm-7am.

McCourt must also present at the door upon request by police and is prohibited from consuming alcohol.

He must also have no contact with the injured party, his family or any prosecution witnesses.
