Earlier this week, Derry Now published the story of two inspirational young Derry men who are battling Parkinson’s Disease.
Under the heading “Parkinson’s not just an 'old person’s disease’,” Michael Stewart (40) and Kieran Whoriskey (39) bravely spoke of how their lives have been changed since being diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease (YOPD).
Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system with no cure.
It is characterised by tremors, shakes and spasms throughout the body that hamper movement and co-ordination.
Although it is a condition that is usually associated with the middle-aged and elderly, Parkinson’s Disease, can strike the young.
Michael and Kieran’s story was picked up by a YOPD sufferer in America who was diagnosed with the condition at just 25 years of age and who underwent life-changing surgery to improve his quality of life..
Steve Squires (pictured), from Goshen in Indiana, got in touch with Derry Now asking we share his story.
He said: “I saw your recent article on Michael Stewart and Kieran Whoriskey.
"I wanted to make you aware of my situation with YOPD.
“I was diagnosed at the age of 25 and had the Focused Ultrasound brain procedure at the University of Maryland. last November.
“Here is my video and I would love to tell you my story.”
We are delighted to share Steve’s video and wish him, Kieran and Michael well.
