Election 2016 VIDEO: Middleton elected as SDLP lose seat

Gary Middleton has retained his seat for the DUP in the Foyle constituency.

The former Deputy Mayor of Derry, the first to be elected, won through after the fourth count following the distribution of the votes of eliminated candidates, Ulster Unionist Julia Kee and former DUP MLA Maurice Devenney, who stood as an Independent Unionist.

Voting is continuing at the Foyle Arena where Mr Middleton is expected to be joined by Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness, SDLP leader Colum Eastwood, his party colleague Mark H Durkan, surprise packet, Eamonn McCann, from People Before Profit and Sinn Fein’s Raymond McCartney

Continuing is continuing and it is predicted the SDLP will lose a seat, outgoing MLA Gerard Diver losing out while Sinn Fein’s Maeve McLaughlin, the chairperson of the Stormont Health Committee, is also set to lose her seat

The final results not expected to be known unitl tomorrow afternoon.
