SDLP Derry Councillor Brian Tierney has called on the Department of Infrastructure and the Education Authority to work together to resource a lay by at St Paul’s School in Galliagh after another accident yesterday.
Cllr Tierney has been working with the local community and the school to secure parking bays but DfI have now said they will not fund the road safety measure.
Cllr Tierney said: “St Paul’s is a school on a main road in Galliagh. Near misses and minor accidents are becoming a regular occurrence and I’m worried that without intervention to improve safety in the area, we’re on a ticking clock until a child is seriously injured.
“I’ve been working with the local community and the school to make proposals of a lay by or parking bay outside that will significantly improve safety for parents and children. It’s extremely disappointing that the Department has come back to say they will consider a plan but will not fund this important work because it’s a matter for the Education Authority.
“The safety of children going to school shouldn’t fall between the cracks of government agencies. The Department for Infrastructure and the Education Authority need to get together and deliver on the plans we are proposing.
“A failure to do so will lead to a serious accident here. And that’s the last thing anyone wants.”
