Anger at 'cruel' House of Commons vote that says animals feel no pain or emotion

SDLP councillor Shauna Cusack has spoken of her disgust at a recent vote taken in Westminster stating that animals feel no pain and or emotion.

Cllr Cusack stated: "this is a crucial and painful time for everyone on these islands with the massive changes which withdrawal from the European Union will bring.

"It now appears it could also bring pain to those least able to protect themselves, our animal population.

"The Government in Westminster is currently working step by step on elements of the EU Withdrawal Bill and debating and voting on which to keep within our domestic law.

"A few days ago NC30, a clause of the Lisbon treaty, which recognises that animals are sentient, i.e. feel pain and have emotions, was denied a place in UK domestic law following a vote of 313 votes to 295 taken in Westminster.

"This clause would have ensured that consideration be given to all animals with regard to their sentience when applying policy. While some of these MPs argue that animal welfare is covered by the Animal Welfare Act of 2006, according to the RSPCA only domestic animals are protected by this Act and nowhere is there mention of sentience.

"I'm appalled that such a small majority made this happen and I would question what difference would the votes or voice of those representing people here have made.

"Personally I am angry. This is yet another example of how given the weak Tory majority every vote and every voice matters, especially at such a momentous time in our future. I would urge all MPs with a conscious and clout to bring pressure to bear on overturning this cruel decision. I would also encourage the public to make their voices heard on this issue."
