Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Eric McGinley has called on the community to be vigilant against car crime.

Cllr. McGinley said: "There have been number of car crime incidents in the Ballymagroarty, Hazelbank, Foyle Springs and Springtown Road areas over the past number of days.

"These incidents involved individuals driving recklessly through built up residential areas endangering people's lives in the process, the burglary of properties with the intention of stealing family cars and the attempted theft of cars parked outside homes.

"I have raised these concerns with the PSNI and have been given assurances that they are working on a number of lines of inquiries in relation to this recent upsurge in crime in the area.   Thankfully the PSNI has also seized a number of these vehicles and taken them off the road.

"I would encourage residents within our communities to be vigilant against this type of criminal behaviour and to report any dangerous or suspicious activity as soon as possible.   The quicker we can respond to these incidents the safer our streets will become."
