Police in Derry have issued a warning to parents after school pupils sent a number of images and abusive images over computers and mobile phones.

A PSNI Foyle spokesperson said: "NCMC has received a number of calls involving images/abusive messages being sent over mobile phones and computers. Alarmingly, from a lot of school pupils, although those who really should know better have fallen foul also.

"Results can be devastating not only for victims but also for their families. For the offender job prospects can be affected. Many a person now regrets that impulsive Tweet or Facebook post they made when they were young and naive.

"Now 'Santa's' list is long and I’m sure mobile phones/laptops are still near the top of the 'must haves'.

"Before you make that all important purchase, after all it’s not cheap, take time to talk to staff about parental control features and social media. How much do you really know about Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram or Snapchat, you might be surprised! Don’t forget if a child can lie to get a Facebook account then turn the tables and think how easy it is for an adult to do the same.

"This information might just help you when your having that difficult conversation trying to keep your loved ones safe online.

"Check security features on your phone/laptop in case they get lost or stolen. It’s most people’s ‘brain’ these days and more than likely they contain a lot of personal information, a lot of which could be lost forever.

"Visit our PSNI website www.psni.police.uk for great advice and get signposted to other valuable help sites."
