A warning has been issued to residents in the Rosemount area of Derry after bogus callers were found to be operating in the area.

Local councillor Darren O'Reilly said that people were knocking on doors claiming to represent Derry City and Strabane District Council and asking for up to £1000 in fines because the homeowner had been found to be guilty of illegal dumping.

Cllr O'Reilly has checked the matter out with the local council who confirmed they would not operate in this way.

The local councillor said he was concerned elderly or vulnerable people could be targeted in the scheme and urged anyone approached to ignore the request and report the incident to council.
