Hundreds of Derry republicans gathered at the Gasyard at the weekend where a new Sinn Fein Cumann was established in memory of Martin McGuinness.
Mr McGuinness's wife Bernie and Martina Anderson MEP presided at the event, which was also attended by the SInn Fein president-elect Mary-Lou McDonald, family friends and special guests from across the island.
The actor John Connors, who was in Derry for a number of talks, read Padraic Pearse emotive poem 'The Mother' at the event.
"My community needs heroes and for me Martin McGuinness was definitely a hero," the Love/Hate actor said.
The party's Patrick Pearse Cumann was also reorganised to include the legacy of Derry IRA volunteer John Starrs who was shot dead in 1972 - that now becomes the Starrs/Pearse Cumann.
Mr McGuinness's lifelong friend, the former Stormont Speaker Mitchel McLaughlin, was a guest speaker and told the event that partition was 'running out of time'.
"Martin will always be an inspiration for his leadership, commitment and vision but John Starrs is also an inspiring figure," he said.
"In the aftermath of Bloody Sunday he and many others stepped up and took on the might of the British establishment. We continue to draw inspiration from them and, indeed from Patrick Pearse,"
Mr McGuinness's son Fiachra welcomed the honour to his late father.
“It’s a wonderful tribute to my father that the new cumann is named in his honour.
“And given his love for the Bogside, It’s also very fitting that is where the new cumann will be based."
Saturday's launch was chaired by Daire Lamberton and presentations were made to the both the McGuinness and Starrs families by Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson.
