Brown food waste bins for everyone in Derry by March of next year

Every domestic property in Derry will have received their brown food waste bins by March of next year, it has emerged.

Around 24,000 brown bins were issued to local homes by the former Derry City Council in 2014 as part of a bid to improve recycling rates and reduce the amount of food waste being taken to landfill sites.

Once collected, the waste is taken to a special processing plant where it is recycled into compost which is used on farms and community gardens.

However, there has been some confusion as to what areas in Derry should have the brown bins, pictured above.

Derry City and Strabane District Council has now revealed that all domestic properties in the council area will have received the food waste bins by March 31, 2017.

The move was revealed at yesterday afternoon's meeting of the council's Environment and Regeneration Committee, where the Waterside Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson asked when the remaining areas in Derry would be in receipt of the bins.

Responding, Conor Canning, Head of Environment with the council, said that a date had been set for March 31 next year for the food bins to be distributed to 'every domestic property' in the council area.
