SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack has weclomed the work undertaken to remove and block and area used as a drink and drug den in a local park.
"For what seems like forever I have been constantly on to Council officials in various Departments to bring their attention to this area in Cregganburn Park which was causing park users great concern," she said.
"During the park's redevelopment trees and foliage had been unwisely removed which not only allowed for the creation of this 'den' but also impacted on noise and privacy issues of nearby residents.
"A number of 'temporary ' measures where put in which was exasperating as I knew they were not fit for purpose."
"Finally, a solid solution has been found and this week work completes on the erection of a wooden fence which will prevent access and allow the plantings behind to grow and mature unmolested.
"I know that I may have sounded like a broken record and that budgets everywhere are extremely stretched right now, but I believe the concerns and safety of our communities is primary and we should be doing all we can to encourage positive use of our parks and shared spaces.
"This begins by making them safe and attractive places to be. Hopefully this is the start of more Council investment in this much needed greenway which services two densely populated residential areas devoid of open space."
She added: "I look forward to further landscaping and plantings as money becomes available and would like to thank those responsible for the work to date."
