A Derry cyclist is set to compete in Ireland’s toughest cycle race.
Foyle Cycling Club’s Ronan McLaughlin (pictured) has been named in the Irish squad for The Ras, the annual, eight-day, stage race around Ireland.
The epic race began in 1953 and has been held every year since. It is one of Ireland’s top sporting events bringing world class sporting action and a significant economic boost to towns and villages nationwide.
The Rás has a worldwide reputation of being a gruelling challenge in the elite, international calendar. The open racing style allows amateur county and club riders to pit themselves against domestic and international professionals.
This year’s event will total almost 1240 kilometres, and will include 25 categorised climbs.
The race will roll out from Dublin Castle on Sunday May 22, with the venue chosen to mark the 2016 Easter Rising commemorations.
The world-ranked event will feature stage finishes in Multyfarnham, Charleville, Dingle, Sneem, Clonakilty, Dungarvan and Baltinglass before concluding in Skerries on May 29.
