'It's absolutely brazen of them' - People from the Waterside illegally dumping their rubbish on the cityside

PEOPLE from the Waterside are illegally dumping their household rubbish in areas on the cityside, the Derry News has learned.

It comes after a number of letters addressed to a house in the Waterside area were found in bin liners full of rubbish which were discarded in the Rosemount area of the city earlier.

The Rosemount area has been plagued with illegal dumping over the past number of years, with the problem continuing unabated despite the introduction of CCTV cameras at fly-tipping ‘hot-spots’ throughout the area.

In the latest incident, a resident living in the Ernest Street area witnessed a car pulling up before a person got out of the vehicle and dumped a number of bags of rubbish on the street.

After being inspected the bags were found to contain letters addressed to a house in the Summer Meadows View area of the Waterside.

The incident was then reported to the independent councillor for the area, Darren O’Reilly, who will now be passing the letters onto Environmental Health officers with Derry City and Strabane District Council.

Speaking to the Derry News, Cllr O’Reilly said that people in the Rosemount area were ‘furious’ that people were using the community as a ‘dumping ground’.

“This problem has been going on for some time but this latest incident is shocking,” he said.

“These people actually made a point of driving into a street in Rosemount before throwing bags of rubbish onto the street and driving away.

“It’s absolutely brazen and the community is furious that there are people out there who think they can use Rosemount as a dumping ground.

“We’ve seen this before where letters have been found in bags dumped here with addresses in Strathfoyle.

“Well, it’s not acceptable and it won’t be tolerated.”

Cllr O’Reilly added that there was ‘no excuse’ for people from the Waterside to be fly-tipping in other areas of the city.

“There is no excuse for people living in the Waterside – or any other areas – to be dumping their rubbish illegally given the amount of facilities across the city,” he said.

“Unfortunately although they are people who think nothing of throwing bin bags full of waste into streets where children play and families live.”
