Incidents of anti-social driving in the Strand Road have reduced, a meeting between the PSNI and local residents heard yesterday evening.
Foyleside and the Moor Neighbourhood Policing Team officers attended the meeting with Strand Road residents, which was organised by Mickey Cooper of Sinn Fein.
It comes after a string of complaints about vehicles with adapted exhausts causing noise pollution in the Strand Road and city centre.
A spokesperson for Foyleside and Mor PSNI said: “Police have been speaking to the young drivers and explaining to them that excess noise, illegal vehicle modifications and excess speed will not be tolerated.
“Police have also been taking a zero tolerance approach to detected driving offences and will continue to do so.
“A new CCTV camera on Strand Road will help us in this respect and any driver continuing to cause alarm and distress to residents runs the risk of having their car seized.”
A camera was recently installed at the corner of Longs Supermarket by the City Centre Initiative to monitor the traffic.
Funding has also been secured to plant trees at the front of Smyths car park, where cruisers congregate at evenings and weekends, to block off the view of the road.
