SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed Council's clean- up of land at the bottom of Glen Road.
"I am glad that Council have now taken action to clean up this eyesore," he said.
"I, and others, have reported this mess in the past and it has got worse and worse with each passing week."
"Illegal dumping like this is not only unsightly but it is also unsafe and creates a real environmental hazard. Concerns were raised with me by residents of Glenview Street and Ardglen as well as motorists and pedestrians who use the Glen Road."
He added: "There should be a zero-tolerance approach to this. People have no excuse for dumping their household waste anywhere other than in their bins or in Council recycling facilities. Bulky lifts can also be arranged through a simple phone call.
"While the engagement of a contractor to clean up the area is welcome it comes at a significant cost to ratepayers. This is money that could be better spent in other areas.
"The contractor will also be removing some of the bushes and undergrowth that have provided cover to those carrying out this disgusting activity.''
