Dog walkers using a popular walking spot in Derry have been urged to be vigilant after a bag containing suspected rat poison was discovered at the site this morning.

The bag (pictured above) was discovered at the Bay Road car park by a warden from the City Centre Initiative (CCI) who was servicing life-saving equipment.

Writing on the CCI's Facebook page, a spokesperson said that the matter has now been reported to Derry City and Strabane District Council and Environmental Health.

"Whilst our servicing the life-saving equipment this morning in the area of Bay Road Park our warden came across this bag near one of the seating areas with bright coloured contents spilled over the footpath," a spokesperson said.

"On closer inspection it appeared to be rat poison which was really concerning given the amount of dogs which are walked around this area. Our warden used his equipment at hand to clear up the hazardous mess and took it away for disposal in a responsible manner.

"Thankfully this area will now be much safer for those who choose to walk their dogs in this area and for any other animals and birds in the park who could have fallen foul of this hazardous mess.

"We have reported this instance to Derry City and Strabane District Council and Environmental Health have advised us on the most appropriate way to dispose the material."
