40 years on…. Derry IRA man shot dead on bus remembered

A Derry IRA man shot and killed by a British soldier 40 years has been remembered at a commemorative event held in the city.

Jim Gallagher, from the Galliagh area, was a passenger on a bus travelling along Strand Road when he was fatally wounded by a soldier based the nearby Fort George army barracks on 17 May 1976.

He had been due to celebrate his 21st birthday and had been released from prison just six days before after serving time for planting a bomb and IRA membership.

Another passenger was seriously injured in the incident.
